On Thursday, 24 March 2016, a conference entitled "Estonia - Door to EU and New Opportunities for Ukrainian Companies" was held at the Estonian Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine. The conference brought together over 100 representatives of Ukrainian business. Artem Sokurov, Counsel, Sytnyk & Partners, was among the speakers at the conference.

The event was organized by Estonian Bank Versobank, Taxpayers Association of Ukraine and the Embassy of Estonia in Ukraine.

The main topics discussed during the conference were the legal and regulatory aspects of starting a business in Estonia, investment protection, aspects of tax residency and business management in Estonia.

During the conference, Artem Sokurov described the major benefits of opening and maintaining Ukrainian business in Estonia. Artem Sokurov also stressed that starting a business in Estonia has to involve Ukrainian advisers in order to avoid problems and the usual mistakes in structuring and opening business in foreign jurisdictions, and to address issues related to the currency regulation of investment transactions.

Other speakers devoted their attention to the legal and regulatory aspects of starting business in Estonia, automatic exchange of financial information for tax purposes, ways to minimize the effects of abolition of banking secrecy, means of trade protection, as well as Estonian tax system and practice of using Estonian companies by Ukrainian business groups.
